The Best All-Purpose Grilling Spice Blend
Summer is a great time for grilling and if you’re wanting to kick it up a notch, try my all-purpose grilling spice blend.
BBQ vs. All-Purpose Grilling Spice Blend
I asked for help from my husband on this one. It seems like a simple enough task, but if you could, wouldn’t you want your grilling to be a little more over-the-top?
Truth is, I wanted to name this my BBQ spice blend but then I got an earful from my husband. Don’t worry, it’s this bit we do as a couple. I ask a question thinking I’ll get a simple yes or no answer but he gives me a 10 page dissertation instead. Usually my eyes glaze over about 2 seconds into it and somehow I still never know the answer. Can you sense my sarcasm & joking tone?
In all seriousness, I love his passion on certain topics and as a chef and former Texan he has a lot to say about barbecue. He corrected my initial title for this spice blend because he sees barbecue as more of a technique and a focus on the meat, not the seasonings and flavors added to it.
So since this recipe will be put on the innerwebs for all to see, and since his name is now attached to it, we’re going to take this spice blend seriously and call it an all-purpose grilling spice blend instead.
Wow, did I just turn into one of those bloggers who gives the whole life story before a recipe? I’m sorry, let’s continue!
Why Make Spice Blends?
You know me and my love for making things from scratch. Most spice blends you’ll find out there are not organic and there may be some ingredients that aren’t necessary.
I do my best to carry bulk spices in my pantry (I get mine from Azure Standard) and so normally I can just whip up a blend quickly. A store typically carries 16-20 oz. sizes and for a season of grilling, that is an ideal size for me to have in my spice cabinet. Spices can last a few years so I like to stock up.
Once it’s made, it so convenient to have on hand rather than scrambling for a handful of spices to season.
What Makes a Good Grilling Seasoning?
Nothing says grilling like a good smoky flavor. That’s why smoked paprika is a must! Outside of that, you just want a good balance of flavors so nothing is too overpowering.
What Can You Add The All-Purpose Grilling Spice Blend To?
You can add it to any meat. Use it as a dry rub on your meats. Also is a great way to transform roasted potatoes. You can also mix this rub into a softened butter to make a BBQ compound butter for steak and veggies. There’s another option where you can add the spice blend to make BBQ. Just add
Equipment Needed
Ingredients
- 20 g salt
- 25 g pepper
- 20 g smoked paprika: Make sure it’s smoked to give it that smoky flavor
- 10 g onion powder
- 10 g granulated garlic
- 5 g mustard
Instructions
Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dry space. When ready, add 2-3 Tbsp each time.
Variations
You can add brown sugar to taste if you want. I wouldn’t recommend it if your grilling your meat because it’ll burn with direct heat. This would be a better option if you’re cooking your meat with indirect meat like roasting or smoking.
